Giraffes, Dung beetles and Outer Space are connected
Elephants are well known for their trunks. This amazing organ is like a limb and hand and is a fusion of the upper lip and nose. Many muscles and nerve units make up this masterpiece of natural engineering and apart from uses such as feeding, social touching and drinking, the trunk is also used for smelling. If you think a bloodhound has a good nose, think again! With around 1000 genes associated with smelling, dogs can smell very, very well…but elephants have over 2000 such genes and can easily smell out diseases, emotions, pregnancies and even distinguish between closely related ethnic groups of humans! They smell out food sources, but their sense of smell is so acute that they can even determine the quantity of such a food source. Oh, and elephants love the pungent smell of oranges and the fruit itself, so maybe not a good idea to eat one near these pachyderms whilst on safari!
